Thousands of flights from to and within the US were again cancelled on Sunday due to the advancing omikron variant of the coronavirus and severe weather in the country’s east.
Sunday’s 2,500 cancelled and 6,400 delayed flights are in addition to 2,700 cancellations Saturday and 1,300 Friday (New Year’s Eve).
A total of 13,000 flights have been cancelled during the busy holiday season since Christmas Eve. Another 800 cancellations are expected before Monday. This weekend, the winter storm that hit the country’s midwest is now moving toward the east coast.
Due to the rapid spread of the omikron variant of the coronavirus, aviation has been struggling with many sick people worldwide since the end of last month. On Sunday, 4100 of the estimated 115,000 flights were cancelled worldwide.
