Irrfan Khan, the Indian actor who starred in the films Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire, died on Wednesday of rare cancer.

Irrfan Khan, known for films such as Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, and Jurrasic World, died on Wednesday in the hospital of the Indian city of Mumbai.

That was confirmed in a short statement by a spokesperson. In 2018, the actor was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour and eventually died of a complication. He was 53.

Khan was one of the first Indian actors to make a mark on Western cinema. His last film, the Bollywood comedy Angrezi Medium, was released in India in March, but then Khan’s health was too bad to be able to promote the film.

The film is not yet out in Belgium and due to the corona crisis, it is not entirely clear if and when this will happen.

Several people have expressed their condolences on Twitter, including the actress Priyanka Chopra.
