Americans Leave Main Base in Afghanistan on Friday

The last American troops are about to leave Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. That was the main base of the Americans during the fight against the Taliban. A senior defence official tells CNN that the last soldier there is expected to have left on Friday.

Over the past two decades, the United States and other NATO countries had stationed tens of thousands of troops on the massive base, which has become a village in itself, including shops and gyms. There is also a prison where members of the Taliban and other extremist groups have been held. George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump have all visited the camp during their presidencies.

The US military is leaving Afghanistan this year and has already transferred several bases, including the large base near Kandahar. So it won’t be long before the Americans have entirely left the country.

The attacks on the US of September 11, 2001, were the reason to go there. However, violence has increased in the country since the withdrawal was announced. The Taliban are carrying out more frequent attacks and are estimated to have captured 90 of the country’s 400 or so districts. The insurgents are now moving towards the capital Kabul.
