British Minister: Russian Peace Mission in Ukraine is Invasion

British Health Minister Sajid Javid has said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has begun. Prime Minister Boris Johnson holds emergency talks with his cabinet on Russia’s recognition of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine and sending Russian “peacekeeping troops” to that region.

Eyewitnesses have already seen those troops in, for example, Donetsk, according to Reuters news agency. Javid calls it “an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Johnson promised Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky in a phone call Monday evening to send more defensive support to Ukraine. He also told Zelensky that British sanctions would affect Tuesday against Russians who are “complicated” in violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Russia already had military personnel in the region before President Vladimir Putin’s announcements Monday, according to observers. The United States, therefore, does not yet speak of an invasion. According to an anonymous US official, it is “no further invasion because it concerns territory they had already occupied”.
