Catholic Church Against Opposition Boycott Venezuelan Elections

The Catholic Church in Venezuela calls mass participation in the upcoming elections “necessary”.

Political change in the country, which is in deep crisis under President Nicolás Maduro’s left-wing authoritarian government, is not possible, according to the church, if the opposition and its voters boycott the elections, as announced at the beginning of this month.

“Despite the irregularities, mass participation of the people is necessary” in the face of “totalitarian efforts and clientelism on the part of the government,” said a statement from the Venezuelan Bishops’ Conference.

The bishops criticized the decision of 27 political parties that support the opposition leader Juan Guaidó to boycott the elections.

The opposition regards the elections as fraudulent in advance. “This is not enough, they must take responsibility for finding a way out,” said the leaders of the church to which most Venezuelans belong.
