On Tuesday, China Coast Guard ships shelled two Philippine boats in the South China Sea with water cannons while en route for a resupply mission to a disputed sandbar in the South China Sea. Philippine Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin said on Thursday.

No one was injured in the incident, but the Philippine boats were forced to turn around.

“The actions of the Chinese Coast Guard are illegal,” Locsin said. “China has no right to law enforcement in and around these areas. So they have to be careful and withdraw.” Locsin has conveyed the Philippine anger “in the strictest possible terms” to the Chinese ambassador and the Chinese foreign ministry.

The two boats were en route to Second Thomas Shoal, also known as Ayungin Shoal, an area claimed by the Philippines. However, regular resupply or troop relief missions are disrupted by Chinese ships.
