The municipality of Nice has introduced a mouth mask requirement in the busiest and most popular places in the city as of Monday 10:00 am.
Until now, the obligation applies to everyone older than ten years. It also includes the famous Promenade des Anglais along the beach.
Offenders can be fined € 35, according to local authorities.
As of last Friday, tens of thousands of mayors in France have more options to take such measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
For example, the mayor of Lille has introduced a facemask obligation in the pedestrian zones, in shopping centres, in parking lots and in parks.
In general, face masks in France are only required on public transport and in closed public areas.
The government has called on the population to be careful because a slight increase in the number of infections has been measured.
