Gary Lineker May Return as Match of the Day Presenter After Controversy Over Tweet

Gary Lineker will present the BBC football program ‘Match of the day’ again after the controversy over his tweet criticizing the UK government’s asylum policy. The British public broadcaster confirms this.

There are still further discussions about the extent to which the presenter is allowed to express his personal opinion on social media.

Lineker recently criticized the British government’s new asylum plans, comparing them to those of Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Conservative MPs then demanded his resignation as a public broadcaster presenter, after which the BBC temporarily removed Lineker from the screen “by mutual agreement”.

This provoked criticism from colleagues of Lineker, who believed that the BBC was bowing to political pressure. The broadcaster’s heavily shortened football programs were shown this weekend without presentation, commentary or analysis.

According to Sky News, the BBC is now reversing its decision and would also apologize to Lineker. However, talks would still be held about how much Lineker may express his personal opinion on social media in the future.
