Ukrainian forces have recaptured key ground in the north of the country, forcing Russian troops to withdraw from areas around Chernihiv and Kyiv.

Great Britain thus confirms reports from Ukraine that already spoke on Monday about the Russian retreat in this area.

The British Ministry of Defense expects small-scale fighting to continue in some of the recaptured areas but will ease this week as the remaining Russian troops move further away.

Many units of the Russians will first have to recover and be equipped with new equipment before they can be deployed again in eastern Ukraine, the British said.

Russia has previously said it has achieved its goals around Kyiv and now wants to focus on eastern Ukraine, where most Russian-speaking Ukrainians live.
