High Schools in South Korea Opened on Wednesday for the First Time This Year

High schools in South Korea opened on Wednesday for the first time this year.

School masks with mouth masks returned to class, the first in a phased reopening plan to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

The start of the new semester had already been postponed several times since March because South Korea had to contend with China’s first significant coronavirus outbreak at the beginning of the year.

Teachers with thermometers and hand gel welcomed the students on Wednesday.

The oldest high school students go back to school first. In the phased reopening between May 20 and June 1, the 5.5 million students in primary, middle school and the rest of the students in high school will follow.

South Korea was one of the first countries to detect the virus outside of China, where the outbreak began. The government immediately took strict measures, so that the peak in numbers of new infections was in March.

Last Tuesday, the country registered 32 new cases. The total number of infections is more than 11,000, 263 people have died from the virus.
