In Germany, another 5132 new coronavirus infections have been identified in the past 24 hours, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German equivalent of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
This means that the rapid increase in the number of new infections in Germany continues.
On Tuesday, the RKI reported 4,122 new cases. Monday there were 2467. German Health Minister Jens Spahn already raised the alarm last week about the “alarming jump” in the number of corona infections. Healthcare is not yet overburdened; he added at the time.
According to a government spokesman, Germany is at the beginning of the second wave of contagion.
Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet again on Wednesday with the government leaders of the sixteen federal states about further steps, German media report. In the capital Berlin, strict rules have been in force since Saturday to restrict nightlife.
The total number of infections in Germany comes with the new cases reported by the RKI on Wednesday morning at 334,585. In the last 24 hours, another 40 people died in Germany from the effects of Covid-19. The total death toll in the Federal Republic thus comes to 9677.
