More Than 80,000 Infections in Germany for the First Time

Germany has registered more than 80,000 corona infections within 24 hours for the first time, according to figures from the health service RKI. Germany is also dealing with the advance of the extra contagious omikron variant of the virus.

The daily figure is considerably higher than last Wednesday, with more than 21,500 extra cases. The previous daily record of more than 76,000 positive tests was set on November 26.

The seven-day average has also increased, according to the RKI, but those data are not considered complete because fewer people got tested around the holidays. The number of infected persons per 100,000 inhabitants increased from 258.5 to 407.5 in a week.

Germany officially has 11,500 corona deaths and almost 7.7 million confirmed infections. The actual numbers are probably higher. Of the more than 83 million German inhabitants, 72 percent have been fully vaccinated, 43.5 percent have had a booster shot.
