Serena Williams beats Arantxa Rus to Reach Wimbledon Second Round. Arantxa Rus had one of the toughest draws possible at Wimbledon. So there was only one thing against Serena Williams: play freely and then see.
That was very nice. The American, 7-time winner in London, won ‘just’ in two sets but certainly did not get a gift: 7-5, 6-3.
Rus saw a Williams, wrapped in white, beside him when he entered the court. But her long trousers seemed to be a judoka, but when she pulled them out after the thrill, the newest fashionable surprise emerged: skin-coloured tights, under her skirt.
Since her birth, Williams likes to keep her muscles covered and warm, but with a temperature of 27 degrees, it was a strange sight. Because the winner of 2015 and 2016 also held her jacket with long sleeves during the party.
The question was how Williams would come for the day. Since Roland Garros, where she retired for her four-part match against Maria Sharapova, she did not play anymore. A muscle injury forced her to a tennis break. And last year Williams also did not play on grass, she was already on maternity leave.
Williams (36) did not start well, but that also applied to Rus, who was immediately broken at her first store. But soon the Dutch got better in the game. And that with a poorly moving Williams opposite him, who scored a lot of waiters and seemed to suffer from the wind that blew over Court 1. Rus defended well and let Williams, who dropped on the ranking but was placed 25th by Wimbledon, always play an extra ball.
Rus also seemed on his way to pull out a tiebreak in the first set but was broken at 5-6. On the second set point of Williams, she had the field entirely open but went too wild forehand. But the South Holland (27) repressed.
She played some excellent points and managed to break Williams in the third game. Rus did not hold onto the lead and was broken at 3-2 and 3-4 himself. Still, she continued to fight, but at the sixth race point, Rus had to capitulate.
