The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs finds the United Kingdom’s decision to close the borders to flights from several African countries due to a new corona variant “rushed”.
South Africa says it is concerned about the damage to tourism and wants to talk to the British authorities about the decision.
The United Kingdom has added six African countries to the red list for fear of the new corona mutation B.1.1.529, which differs in many ways from the Delta variant. Flights from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia, among others, will be banned from Friday afternoon.
Israel also imposes travel restrictions on those African countries, as does Singapore. Australia and Japan are also considering imposing travel restrictions to keep the new corona variant out.
The World Health Organization (WHO) will research the new variant in the near future. However, scientists think it is too early to say anything about the effectiveness of the existing vaccines in this new variant.
