The number of new corona infections detected in Germany in the past 24 hours has risen sharply compared to the number of new infections reported on Tuesday.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German equivalent of the RIVM, reported 19,600 new infections on Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday, the RKI reported only 12,802 new infections, which means that the number of new cases remained stable compared to Monday. In total, the lung virus has now been diagnosed in 1,953,426 people in Germany.
In the past 24 hours, another 1,060 people in the Federal Republic have died from Covid-19. That brings the total death toll in Germany to 42,637.
At the end of last year, a hard lockdown was announced in Germany at about the same time as the Netherlands.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel expects her country to be in lockdown until the beginning of April to prevent the coronavirus spread.
