Thousands of People Flee Their Homes Due to Storm East Coast Australia

Tens of thousands of people fled their homes on Tuesday due to the storm on the east coast of Australia. In the states of Queensland and New South Wales, roads and houses have been flooded, leaving people stranded on bridges or on the roof of their homes.

Rescuers are busy freeing them with lifeboats and helicopters; more than a thousand people have already been rescued.

So far, nine people have died as a result of the floods, and the death toll is expected to rise. The most recent victim is an 80-year-old woman from New South Wales. She was found in her home in the town of Lismore. The other eight have died from flooding in Queensland.

Heavy rain will move south on Tuesday. The megacity of Sydney and the south coast must take into account possible torrential rains and severe flooding. About 300,000 people in the state of New South Wales must prepare for a possible evacuation, national authorities said. It has been raining for days in Sydney; meteorologists call the city’s wettest in 30 years this summer.

In some places on the east coast, as much as one meter of rain has fallen in a week. As a result, rivers overflowed their banks or burst through dikes, flooding cities. In places where it is dry, improvised evacuation centres have been set up in primary schools and recreation centres.
