UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has offered former German Chancellor Angela Merkel a job at the United Nations. Several sources reported this to the German news agency DPA.
Guterres allegedly asked Merkel to chair an advisory council of former heads of state and government. That council should consider matters of common interest where improvement is needed and how it can be achieved. Examples include the ozone layer, but also aviation safety, and world trade.
Guterres is said to have personally made the offer to Merkel. But, according to the sources, the chance that the former chancellor will respond to it is relatively slight. Merkel would not have replied yet.
In September, Merkel failed to run for election, leaving German politics after 16 years as chancellor.
