A US government official estimates that between 5,000 and 6,000 Russian soldiers were killed during the invasion of Ukraine.
However, in an interview with CBS News, the official admits that it is “difficult to make the estimate”. The actual number of Russian soldiers killed could also be “closer to 3,500”.
Nevertheless, the official speaks of a “very significant number of casualties”, also, for example, compared to the losses suffered in the Second World War.
The official could not say how many Russian soldiers were injured, but a rule of thumb, according to CBS News, is that this number is three times higher than the number killed.
Ukraine claims 12,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the past two weeks. The Kremlin says it is about 500 soldiers. None of these claims can be independently verified.
