US Wants UN Sanctions Against Iran Again

US President Donald Trump wants the United Nations to reset all previously suspended sanctions against Iran.

Trump has instructed his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to convey that intention to the UN Security Council.

Pompeo is expected to travel to New York on Thursday to try to bring about a resumption of sanctions against Iran. Pompeo also has a meeting with UN chief Antonio Guterres on the agenda that day.

The sanctions were once imposed to prevent Iran from continuing to develop an atomic bomb.

The sanctions were dropped after an agreement between Iran, the United States, the European Union, Russia, China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Under Trump, the United States withdrew from the accord that its predecessor Barack Obama had long worked for.

The Security Council is not expected to agree with Trump’s desire to reinstate the sanctions.
