Several major American progressive women’s organizations called on Thursday for large numbers to take to the streets on May 14 to demonstrate the right to abortion.
Earlier this week, it became clear that the conservative majority in the US Supreme Court wants to put that right.
“On May 14, we will express our anger,” said Kelley Robinson of Planned Parenthood, an organization that runs many abortion clinics in the US. Planned Parenthood will organize large demonstrations in Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and expects “hundreds of thousands of people”.
Other demonstrations are planned. “It’s going to be a summer of rage,” said Rachel Carmona of Women’s March. That movement gathered thousands of women in 2017 for a demonstration against then-US President Donald Trump.
Earlier this week, the Politico website published a draft decision seeking to reverse the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that constitutionally guaranteed the right to abortion. Chief Justice John Roberts acknowledged the document’s authenticity but added that it does not express a definitive position.
